Rick Carswell and Alison Kirkley are a husband-and-wife
design team specializing in art furniture. Their award-wining
work has been shown in numerous exhibits in and around Vancouver,
BC, including the Circle
Craft gallery on Granville Island, Canadian Craft Museum,
Atrium Gallery, and Queen's Park Art Gallery -- in their home
town of New Westminster.
From family kitchens to high tech firms, Kirkley Carswell's
distinctive style of art furniture has taken a wide range of
shapes and sizes over recent years but architectural elements
are found in all their designs which incorporate gestures of
the Art Deco, Arts and Crafts and modern periods.
Working almost exclusively on a commission basis,
their creative process involves close consultation with clients,
and both artists mutually develop the design concept. Rick's
area of expertise is the structural and fine woodworking while
Alison, through colour treatments of paint, patination and texture,
transforms each piece.

"We make furniture that is highly functional but at the
same time has a strong design and decorative appeal. The form,
structure, colour and texture blend to create a piece that can
be the focal point in a room.
"As furniture designers and makers, we are tied
closely to function. Does it work well? Is it comfortable? We
are always mindful of the function, yet we seek to stretch the
design, allowing it to take us into challenging territory where
we explore and set our style. Our reward is the client who enjoys
the usefulness of the one-of-a-kind piece and values the strong
visual quality the piece brings to the home.
"Our furniture is very useful, but definitely
not ordinary."
